Education and Plastic Surgery Training
R. Laurence Berkowitz, MD, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in art history at the University of Michigan, graduating cum laude. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.
Dr. Berkowitz spent the next six years at the University of Michigan Medical Center, where he completed residencies in straight surgery, general surgery and plastic surgery. He then served as a Research Fellow in plastic surgery at the prestigious Stanford University School of Medicine and as a Christine Kleinert Fellow in hand surgery at the University of Louisville.
Dr. Berkowitz sits on the board of directors of Interplast, an organization providing plastic and reconstructive surgery to underserved communities in developing nations. Through his involvement in Interplast, Dr. Berkowitz has had the honor of providing surgical services in Mexico, Honduras and Peru. Dr. Berkowitz also serves as Director of La Ceiba Project, visiting Honduras twice yearly to maintain the plastic surgery clinic that the project established there in 1979.

Dr. Berkowitz is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
He has held the position of assistant professor of surgery at Stanford University, as well as Director of the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center burn unit. He has also served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, and as secretary of the department of surgery at the same institution.
Dr. Berkowitz currently has hospital privileges at Good Samaritan Hospital, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Community Hospital of Los Gatos, O’Connor Hospital and Stanford University Hospital.
As an authority in plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Berkowitz is frequently asked to speak at plastic surgery conventions across the United States and Canada. In addition to his private practice, humanitarian efforts and presentations, Dr. Berkowitz has also authored several plastic and reconstructive surgery articles, which have been published in peer-reviewed science journals and medical books.
Dr. Berkowitz is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the California Society of Plastic Surgeons, the California Medical Association, the Santa Clara County Medical Society, the San Jose Surgical Society and the Rhinoplasty Society.
